Here is the Hydman family in 1942 on a park bench in Söder, a part of Stockholm, all dressed up and on our way to a Sunday dinner: Mother Margit, Ulrica six years old, my sister Anna and my father Stig. My mother, Margit Johansson-Billberg was an only child, and she grew up in a middle-class home. I never met my grandparents on my mother´s side. They didn´t want to see their only daughter because in their opinion she should have made a better marriage than with a poor working-class lad. This was a major reason ehy my parents became so thightly knit, and kept together in an exceptional and loving way all their life...
My father Stig was the youngest of twelve children, and he grew up in Österskär in Roslagen, north of Stockholm. Grandfather Johan Hydman was a Walloon and he had emigrated from Belgium; he built boats. He died suddenly when Father was six years old, and left Grandmother Anna alone with all the children. Father started his own business, and Mother was at home with us children. When we were older, she worked in Father´s firm as a seamstress. She was artistically gifted, and inspired three of us children to choose artistic professions. My brother Hubert studied at Konstfack, the National School of Arts, Crafts and Design, and became a silversmith, and my sister Rebeckha followed the textiles´programme. They both work in a strict and constructive style.
